Frequently Asked Questions

KIDS MARTIAL ARTS

Q. Will Martial Arts teach my child to resort to violence?

A. No. In fact, the opposite is true. We teach our kids respect, discipline and tranquility. An important part of Martial Arts is learning self control, which includes when and how to use their skills. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is called, “The Gentle Art” mainly because it was developed as a form of self defense. We constantly reinforce that the skills they learn at the academy are used for self defense which helps the kids to understand that Martial Arts should not be used in an aggressive or violent manner. Martial Arts develops self confidence and self esteem in its practitioners which helps the kids feel confident that they can protect themselves if necessary. Through our teaching, support, and several programs we have in place; the kids learn to respect Martial Arts and themselves in turn eliminating the possibility for a child to act out in a violent way.

Q. Does my child run the risk of injury at your facility?

A. Safety is of the utmost importance at our academy. We specifically designed our academy, our classes, number of Instructors on the mat, and the manner in which we teach to protect our students. We cannot guarantee that a child will never be injured in class, but safety is enforced every day and in every class. Our instructors are taught on an ongoing basis what to watch for and how to make sure that the kids are safe during classes. We go to extremes to make sure that injuries are kept at a minimum.

Q. Will my child have fun in your class, or is it more of a strict, structured environment?

A. We always strive to create a balance of structured, character and strength-enhancing Martial Arts in a fun, enjoyable environment. We find that our students have a great time during class and can’t wait until their next training!

Q. I’m worried that my child is too old or too young to start Martial Arts. At what age should beginners enroll?

A. We welcome all ages and skill levels at our facility! Our Jiu-Jitsu program starts at 4 years old with new members of all ages joining our team every day. We are one of the only academies in the Bay Area that structures our kids classes, so that children are separated by both age AND experience level providing them with both age appropriate and skill appropriate instruction. This helps children who are new to Martial Arts feel more secure and comfortable when starting their Martial Arts journey.

Q. Is Martial Arts just for boys or can my daughter enroll in your school?

A. Our facility and classes are completely co-ed. Because Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was developed as a form of self defense, we believe it essential that you enroll not only your sons, but your daughters too. We have a very large group of girls and women training on our team. We think it is important for boys and girls to learn both discipline and respect together in a fun environment. We have a very diverse group of students and would love to have your child join our Martial Arts family!

BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU

Q. What can Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and your school do for me?

A. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a highly effective form of self-defense that promotes a healthy lifestyle through exercise, flexibility, self confidence, discipline and structure. Adding Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to your fitness routine can help you to get in shape, gain confidence and release stress; all while forming a network of like-minded people sure to motivate and inspire you. Our academy not only excels in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, but also offers a safe, friendly, and family-style atmosphere that many of our students consider their “second home.”

Q. Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu beneficial for women?

A. Absolutely! Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is excellent for rape prevention and other forms of self-defense necessary for women since most attacks end up on the ground. Also, Jiu-Jitsu was designed for smaller people. Women will not find their smaller stature a hindrance, but will instead learn how to use leverage and balance in their favor.

Q. What is a Gi and why do I have to wear one?

A. A Gi (referred to in Brazil as a Kimono) is the uniform that is typically worn when training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It consists of three pieces: a jacket, pants and a belt. The material it is made with is designed to withstand the rigors of daily training . Many Jiu-Jitsu practitioners regard their Gi in the same way a Knight would his armor. Most practitioners of Jiu-Jitsu who advocate the usage of the Gi cite the more technical aspect of grappling with a Gi. The Gi also serves as a way to develop a strong grip, balance and control. Fighting with the Gi requires a high level of precision and attention to detail – two tools essential for good Jiu-Jitsu. In addition, the Gi creates a lot of friction in between you, your opponent and the ground helping your stamina and overall conditioning.

Q. What are the belt rankings in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

A. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) uses colored belts and stripes to mark your progression, and Crispim BJJ & MMA follows the IBJJF belt ranking guidelines. Unlike other Martial Arts where a Black Belt marks a person’s proficiency in a style, in BJJ the rank of Black Belt is conferred to individuals who have mastered the art of BJJ. In addition, there are guidelines for age to ensure that only those who master the art will receive a Black Belt. The adult belt system is White, Blue, Purple, Brown and Black. Often academies will award up to 4 stripes on each belt up to the Brown Belt. Once you receive your Black Belt, you will earn stripes based on time in your Black Belt. The ranks for children are different and additional levels/colors of belts have been added. We have the specifics of the belt system posted at the academy; however, for more detailed information on the Belt System and its requirements please visit the IBJJF website.
